Drumming Classes

Tuesdays: West African and Haitian drumming

All Levels Class: An ongoing ensemble that works on drum rhythms, percussion techniques and songs primarily from Ghana and Haiti. This class has a strong emphasis on community, ensemble learning and performance, and is appropriate for all levels of experience. All instruments are provided. Classes meet from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM.

Intermediate/Advanced Class: This group trains in performance level drumming and has the opportunity to perform at various events throughout the year. Students will be expected to practice outside of the class to develop the proficiency of the entire group. Less time is spent on technique and basic concepts, with more emphasis on ensemble playing, arrangements and improvisation. Students must have at least one year of drumming with Marc or another teacher and will need to consult with Marc to participate. Classes meet from 8:00 PM to 9:30 PM.

Class Meetings for 2008:

August: 5, 12, 19, 26
September: 2, 9, 16, 23, 30
October: 7, 14, 21, 28
November: 4, 11, 25
December: 9, 16, 23

The cost is a suggested donation of $10.

Private Instruction

I accept students for private instruction on a limited and case-by-case basis. Students who are participating in one of my West African drum ensembles are welcomed and encouraged to augment their studies with private lessons. I will also work with intermediate and advanced level percussionists on individualized multi-percussion studies.

School Programs

I have a number of ongoing drum ensembles in schools in the Twin Cities. These classes are are offered to students enrolled in the particular schools, although I do open my Hamline ensemble to non-Hamline students occasionally.
