Drums in the Church
Drum circle experiences for religious communities

“The village where there is no drumming is not a place where people can live”        African proverb

I am happy to be offering group drum experiences for spiritual communities in the Twin Cities area. So many congregations are searching for fun, innovative and meaningful ways to come together. This is a great program for inter-age groups, youth groups, retreats, staff development, congregational musicians and choirs or as a community wide gathering. This is a guaranteed success as a one-time event, a multi-session workshop or an on going drum group.

The joyful healing power of group drumming has been at the center of cultural life for centuries. It is the both the product of and the engine for community identity and social communication. It provides a context for the development and expression of skills and values such as, cooperation, patience, generosity, poise, intuition, concentration, and mind-body coordination. It naturally draws us into relationship in a joyful and nurturing atmosphere.

I have been studying, performing, and teaching drumming for more than 30 years.
My studies in traditional drumming have taken me to Ghana, Kenya, Brazil and China. I have also done extensive work in the U.S on Ghanaian, Haitian, East Indian, Afro-Cuban, Middle-Eastern and American popular drum traditions. I have performed on more than 40 recordings for the Catholic music publishing company GIA and more than 200 secular recordings. GIA also published an instructional DVD that I made called Drums in the Church. I have presented drum clinics and workshops for The National Pastoral Musicians Conference, the BILAC conference in Hawaii on Music and Liturgy as well as hundreds of classes and workshops in churches, schools and other organizations across the country.
